Take a Sip of Summer's Mojito Madness

A favorite drink of Ernest Hemingway, the mojito has been making people happy for centuries. A mixture of light rum, sugar, lime juice, mint and sparkling water, the mojito can be traced back to a similar Cuban cocktail known as 'El Draque,' named in honor of Sir Francis Drake in the mid 1600s.

Fast forward to the 19th century when African slaves working in the Cuban sugar cane fields further refined the mojito when they discovered Guarapo, the juice of raw sugar cane. The sweetness of the nectar complemented the rum, tangy citrus and cool mint, creating the perfect combination of flavors.

Now step into the 21st century. The classic Cuban cocktail is taking America by storm and giving credence to the wise saying, 'everything old is new again.' According to Menu Insights, the number of American restaurants serving mojitos has increased by 350% over the last three years.

While the classic mojito remains a refreshing favorite, exotic fruits are driving innovation on drink menus across the country. Mangos, pomegranates, blueberries and more are being mixed, muddled and stirred to create tropical versions of the classic mojito that are ideal for summer.

Here's a look at some of the best mojitos adorning cocktail menus across America:
