Several cities are celebrating folk and culture throughout the month of November with traditional festivals and fairs. These folk festivals are great fun, featuring crafts, music, dancing, food and more.
So what can you expect at these folk fairs? First, you'll fill up on some great food. Folk festivals usually feature a variety of vendors serving homemade ethnic dishes prepared right before your eyes. Beer gardens are also common at folk fairs.
When it comes to the music, it's nearly impossible to pin down an exact definition of folk. Folk music is typically thought of as the music of the common people. It is community focused and it is accessible. And what keeps it interesting is the broad range of styles. Folk music ranges from bluegrass and alternative country to protest music and folk rock.
Folk dancing is also traditional at these festivals. Expect to see social dances of different ethnic groups that incorporate village steps and rhythms. If you're feeling the folk, don't be afraid to join in. These dances encourage participation - the more, the merrier. You can also expect to find interesting crafts, art and other handmade items from different villagers and vendors.
