Five Planetariums That Will Rock Your World

Just because Old Man Winter is rolling in doesn't mean you can't study the stars without freezing to death. Come and contemplate the cosmos in one of the countries most sophisticated intergalactic planetariums.

For those of you who are unacquainted with the majesty that these outer space spectacles offer, a planetarium consists of a dome-shaped screen onto which scenes of stars, planets and other heavenly objects are displayed. Furthermore, the planetarium subjects the audiences to an educational show that teaches you about the layout of the solar system and the spatial depth of the universe.

Samuel Oschin Planetarium, Griffith Observatory - Los Angeles, Calif.
This impressive space dome underwent a 93 million dollar renovation in 2006. The latest incarnation features state-of-the-art computer and laser projection systems, and at 75 feet, boasts one of the world's largest domes.

Hayden Planetarium - New York City, N.Y.
Located in Central Park West, the original Hayden Planetarium was demolished in 1997 and replaced with this incredible facility. The audience can view full dome planetary presentations from the top half of the sphere or witness the conception of the universe in the lower half of the sphere during a four-minute long program called "The Big Bang Theater."

Morehead Planetarium - Chapel Hill, N.C.
Originally constructed in 1949, the Morehead Planetarium was designed by the architects who planned the Jefferson Memorial and was the very first star station to be built on a college campus, the University of North Carolina. Come and see star-watching sessions, hear informative public lectures and participate in other events and activities. This planetarium features a large 68-foot dome for an optimum experience.

Minneapolis Planetarium - Minneapolis, Minn.
Quite possibly the most elaborate and technologically advanced astrological dome in existence, the Minneapolis Planetarium is truly out of this world. But don't get too excited...yet. The planetarium is set to make its big debut in 2012, the year of the apocalypse. Situated at the Minneapolis library, the planetarium will feature a dome of an unparalleled magnitude along with the most current projection systems, software and expertise.

Albert Einstein Planetarium - Washington D.C.
Located within the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Albert Einstein Planetarium sets itself apart as a very unique celestial experience. What makes this star dome so distinguished from other planetariums is its sizable array of presentations and its Zeiss Mark IV projector, a gift from West Germany for the United States bicentennial. Additionally, the theater is equipped with a SkyVision dual digital projection system with six channel surround sound for a hybrid demonstration.
