Eleven Unusual Tax Laws: Playing Cards, Tattoos And Sparklers

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

9. Alabama Taxes Playing Cards
Even if you were just planning on playing an innocent game of Go Fish, the state of Alabama is not going to let you get away with it. The state imposes a 10 cent tax on all playing cards sold. The tax is one of many administered by the Tobacco Tax section of the states sales and use taxes.

The fact that this particular tax comes from the tobacco portion of the state's tax laws indicates that this particular fee is a sin tax meant to curb the act of gambling. And while this may be costing amateur magicians a little extra money to perform card tricks, it's also bringing in a good deal of revenue.

10. Arkansas Taxes Body Art
If you're planning on getting that tattoo of Mom that you always wanted on your backside, don't do it in Arkansas. The entire state now imposes sales tax on tattoos, piercings and even electrolysis. Administering any of these services is subject to a 6 percent fee along with about thirteen other services, like boat storage and pet grooming.

The addition of tattoo, piercing and electrolysis to the list of taxable services in Arkansas happened recently and probably was not welcome news to local tattoo parlors, like 7th Street Tattoo and Brainstorm Tattoo.

11. West Virginia Taxes Sparklers
While sparklers may seem like a pretty tame way to celebrate the Fourth of July or any holiday, West Virginia is not in agreement. The state not only imposes sales tax on sparklers and other explosive "novelties," it also requires sellers to pay a $15 fee on top of the tax to get a certificate that allows them to sell the items.

The taxation of these items fall under the Fire Prevention and Control Act in West Virginia. Fireworks, as defined by state law, are expressly outlawed in the West Virginia but sparklers and novelties are not. The state's definition of "novelties" includes those little glow worm things that look like a snake when you burn them.
