Philadelphia's Philly Cheesesteak
Other cities have tried to duplicate the cheesesteak but there's nothing that can equal the amazing taste of an authentic one from the City of Brotherly Love itself. REAL CHEESE STEAKS AREN'T MADE WITH CHEEZ-WHIZ, like the mass-market slop at Pat's. White American cooked into the steak is the real deal. Make it Provolone or Mozz, add a little pizza sauce and you have a pizza steak. It's gotta' be on an Amoroso roll. I grew up in the Philly burbs. Walt's, LaSpada's, D&C and a few others come to mind as the home of REAL cheese steaks. Cheez-Whiz. Are you kiddin' me? Bleccch. OK for Nachos at the Pack-N-Stuff-It, but never on a cheese steak. Pat's is for tourists and AOL food editors who don't know better.

I surprised you did not mention chicken wings in Buffalo, NY. The top three places for Buffalo wings include, Frank and Thersa's Anchor Bar, Duff's and Cole's.

When I go back home to Annapolis, I try to always get over to G & M for my crab "fix". It is close to BWI, so it's easy to get there and always worth it. Also the renovations they have done are outstanding and expansive, so if you've been there before the renovations, you should go back. I also miss Jimmy Cantler's near Annapolis...a bit off the beaten path, but an area treasure and accessible by water. It's almost heaven to head over, eat some crabcakes, then find a spot to hang on the hook overnight.

Anyone out there remember when Best of Philly name Gaitanos in South Jersey as having best cheesesteak? I do - and they were right - but what a stink that was to name outside of Philly! Yum yum!

By far, the best crab cakes in the entire area may be found at Barbara Jeans in the European Village in Palm Coast, FL. My wife was from Baltimore and said these rated with the very best.

The two best locations for crab cakes in the Baltimore area are Michael's, an upscale restaurant in Timonium, which also serves pretty good steak and seafood, and a little hole-in-the-wall bar in Bowleys Quarters, Maryland called The Landing Strip. Both places serve very nice sized lump backfin crab cakes with practically NO FILLER. And at The Landing Strip you don't have to pay for ambiance which leaves you an extra 20 bucks to spend on some cold Natty Bohs, hon!

For crab cakes in Maryland, I also put in a plug for By the Docks and G & M. They will make you a crabcake snob. I have been to the Landing Strip, good, but cross the street to By the Docks. For a south Jersey cheesesteak, go to Big John's on Rt. 70 in Cherry Hill.

Gaetanos is good, but the best cheesesteaks are in Atlantic County, NJ. Sugar Hill Subs in Mays Landing and White House in Atlantic City are legendary. Atlantic CIty rolls far superior to Amaroso, and that's not a knock on Amaroso. I agree that provolone much better than Cheeze Wiz, but the Wiz is more authentic.

Best Crab Cakes in Maryland are Edgewater Restaurant in of course Edgewater, MD. Problem is everyone is finding out and coming from all over and swamping this great little restaurant.

There is nothing better than the "All Jumbo Lump" crab cakes at Dwights Bistro in Jacksonville Beach, Fl. People from all over the world, including Maryland, come there for these delicious cakes.

The crab cake recommendations have NO credibility at all since they do not include Jerry's Seafood in Lanham (and Bowie), Maryland. I now live in California and have them shipped here. I have never tasted better in any region of this country (or any other)!

If you're in S. Philly, cheesesteaks at Tony Lukes are the best. Jim's on South St is good in a pinch. Chickie n Petes are good too. They have a place in the airport too.

My daughter-in-law who is from Germany makes a crab cake to die for. There is not a crumb of bread or filler. Don't know her receipe because crab is not always available in the northeast. I have tasted many but hers, in my opinion have no equal. No, she does not sell them

When you did your testing you missed the best, so go back. There is NO better crabcake then Maryland crabcakes found at Hellas on Veterans Hwy. in Millersville, Marland. My mother even get them shipped to her in Florida. They are huge, full of crab and the flavor is perfect!

Some of the best crab cakes are at O'Donnell's at the Kentlands in Gaithersburg, MD., a venerable seafood restaurant run by the same family and with previous (now closed) venues in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD.
