With this victory fresh in our minds (no matter what happens over there next, at least we beat Spain), the Kicking & Screening Film Festival starts in New York City on Tuesday, July 14.

This soccer-themed event will air four soccer movies and a soccer game for five nights at several soccer-friendly venues around Manhattan. And some soccer stars, like Alexi Lalas, will even make an appearance.

Among the films you'll have the opportunity to watch, Les Yeux dans les Bleus is a documentary about the French team as they play and win the 1998 World Cup. This exciting movie will kick off the whole festival when it airs for an audience at Opia Restaurant. Come for a half hour of cocktails at 7 pm, stay for the movie immediately afterward and the after party, which starts at 11 pm. The film will screen at Central Bar. Come for cocktails at 6:30 pm and stay for the movie which will start at 7:30 pm

If you're in town, make sure you come out to see a little bit of this festival. You could go to a boring old movie theatre and see the latest blockbuster, but why not mix it up a bit and hit up an outdoor venue?

Though the old-school drive-ins may not be as widespread as they once were, there are a number of reasonable facsimiles and outdoor film fests that fit the bill. Some awesome options:

Chicago has an Outdoor Film Fest that takes place Tuesday nights during the summer. Hang out in Butler Field with several hundred of your friends as you watch fab flicks like Sunset Boulevard and Tootsie.

Bethesda, Maryland also has an outdoor film fest on the lawn at Strathmore Music Hall, and often shows a mix of recent family, action and comedy releases. (The '09 schedule hasn't been released yet, but it's coming.)

Bryant Park in New York is the site of the HBO summer film festival, an awesome spot to hunker down with a blanket and picnic basket while you watch movies under the glow of Manhattan's lights.

L.A.'s Cinespia takes the outdoor movie concept in a unique direction with their Cemetery Screenings in the Hollywood Forever cemetery. Hang out among the deceased greats like Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks, just to name a few, while watching classic films old and new.

If you're really searching for that old drive-in feel, MobMov is a great place to start. With chapters all over the nation, MobMov takes the drive-in concept and works it guerilla style by finding a makeshift screen, gathering enthusiasts, and screening the flick of choice from a portable projector.

And last but not least, Drive-ins.com has a comprehensive listing of drive-ins that are still rocking and rolling across the U.S.

Happy summer movie season!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

'Bama Girl' Continues Tour Through South

If you haven't had a chance to see the acclaimed documentary Bama Girl from director Rachel Goslins, this may be your chance. The film, which originally premiered at SXSW last year, is currently touring through several Southern theaters.

It kicked off this week at Florida Community College of Jacksonville on Tuesday but you still have eight chances to catch it.
Tonight, North Carolina locals can catch the film at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. The film follows Jessica Thomas, an African-American student at the University of Alabama. At a school where segregation and racial exclusivity play leading roles, Thomas seeks the title of Homecoming Queen.

The film directly confronts an unfair tradition and reveals the real social structure at work behind the curtain of the University. It received praise upon its release and has since premiered on IFC and become available on DVD.

Bama Girl will make a few other stops before its through with the South and each showing will be followed by a Q&A with either Rachel Goslins or Jessica Thomas:

April 16: Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina at 7 pm
April 17: Simons Center for the Arts in Charleston, South Carolina at 8 pm
April 18: Imperial Theater in Augusta, Georgia at 7:30 pm
April 20: Nickelodeon Theater in Columbia, South Carolina at 6:30 pm
April 21: Capri Theater in Montgomery, Alabama at 7:30 pm
April 22: Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi at 7 pm
April 23: Mobile Arts Council in Mobile, Alabama at 7 pm
April 24: Arts Council of Central Louisiana in Alexandria, Lousiana at 7 pm

This exciting annual event is jam packed with fantastic world premieres, star-studded appearances, and the like. With 151 films from 55 countries, there is something for everybody.

This year's film award recipients include Robert Redford for the Peter J. Owens Award (Don't miss the new print screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), and Francis Ford Coppola will be there for the Founder's Directing Award. Young starlets Evan Rachel Wood and Elijah Wood will also be in town to receive the Midnight Awards.
This is a don't-miss. For film buffs who can make it, don't panic just yet. Here are some upcoming films to check out in the near future, at your local theater:

500 Days of Summer (USA) - This anti-romantic comedy is sure to please as a date flick. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a greeting-card writer by trade, meets officemate Summer (Zooey Deschanel), his quirky ideal of a dream girl. Director Marc Webb tells the story out of llinear sequence, with Summer dumping Tom over pancakes in the beginning sequence. Crisp dialogue, drunken get-togethers, a bar fight, and a dance number promises to make this a charming winner.

La Mission (USA) is an ode to San Francisco's Mission District by Peter Bratt. A story about community, family, and one man's struggle to unlearn a lifetime of destructive habits, Benjamin Bratt does a commanding portrayal of Che, an ex-con who has turned his life around.

Rudo Y Cursi (Mexico) - A raucous romp between two bickering stepbrothers, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna team up for this highly-anticipated soccer comedy.
